Milan’s web development market

Milan’s digital market differs noticeably from markets where most demand is concentrated around corporate websites and local promotion. Product studios building B2B services and applications operate alongside strong e-commerce teams serving fashion and retail, agencies with experience in major media and institutional projects, and technology partners working with cloud infrastructure, APIs and corporate systems. The structure reflects the city’s economy: Milan remains a center of Italian fashion, design, finance, retail, publishing and the headquarters of major companies.

A review of twenty companies reveals several stable directions. Moze and Coding Duck lean toward product development and web applications; Hoculus, Boraso and part of The Rope’s practice are deeply focused on e-commerce; Colla Studio combines branding, UX/UI, headless architecture and 3D; Instilla builds projects at the intersection of marketing, data, CRM and development; eFarm Group is strong in applied business systems. Larger companies such as Alkemy and Caffeina work at the level of broad digital transformation and national brands. For comparison, Big Fish Digital (BFD) builds complex corporate websites and web services using Laravel, Vue.js, databases and API integrations, placing it closer to the technology-driven side of the same market.

Milan also shows clearly how web design has moved beyond being a separate decorative service. For an online store, design is connected to the catalog, PIM, CRM and omnichannel logic; for a B2B service, to user roles, scenarios and data; for media, to editorial architecture and publishing speed; for a startup, to rapid launch of the first product version and further iterations. This helps explain the wide range in website development costs across the city: the word “website” may refer to a small marketing project, a Shopify Plus e-commerce platform, or a web application with its own server-side architecture.

The ranking includes companies with a verified presence in Milan or the surrounding metropolitan area and public examples of completed work. The order reflects a combination of scale, portfolio quality, project complexity, technical competence and specialization. It is an editorial structure for the market review rather than an attempt to assign mathematically precise positions to each team.

Alkemy

Alkemy is one of the larger digital companies to emerge from Milan’s business environment, with its group headquarters on Via San Gregorio. Its work extends far beyond the scope of a traditional web studio and combines technology, data, design, media, e-commerce and customer experience. This profile makes Alkemy relevant to large companies where website development is connected to CRM, analytics, content, advertising, loyalty systems and corporate data.

The group’s public positioning emphasizes unified customer experience, data and AI, technology, e-commerce and engagement. Alkemy has dedicated practices for data platforms, AI, customer engagement and retail technology, so its projects are closer to transformation programs than standalone websites on an off-the-shelf CMS. It is a suitable option when a digital channel forms part of a broader corporate system and the project requires several disciplines at once.

Caffeina

Caffeina is a large Italian agency with an office on Via Tortona in Milan and teams in Parma and Rome. In 2026, the company publicly reports more than two hundred specialists and divides its work into Creativity, Consultancy, Digital Product and Digital Media. Its portfolio includes projects for Paramount+, ActionAid, Garmont, Arca Vita and Arca Assicurazioni, while its Dynamo unit focuses on the creation of digital products.

For Arca Vita and Arca Assicurazioni, Caffeina presents a digital platform project; for Garmont, work focused on growing online sales; for Paramount+, an immersive digital experience. The company’s strength lies in bringing research, UX/UI, technology development, communication and media support into one structure. Caffeina is especially suitable for brands that need a connected digital product with a significant communications component.

Moze

Moze is an independent Milan digital product studio founded in 2012. It works with B2B companies, technology businesses and startups, combining product design with development. Its portfolio includes Matesub, a web application for creating subtitles with AI; Edulia, an educational platform for Treccani; the ClioMakeUp e-commerce project; the Caprionline service; PastBook and Efforce applications; and B2B products for Nanosystems and Tomasi Auto.

Moze publishes a more detailed technology stack than many agencies. The studio lists React and Next.js for web projects, React Native for mobile applications, Node.js for backend development, MongoDB and PostgreSQL for data, WordPress for fully custom websites and Shopify for e-commerce. For infrastructure, the team uses managed cloud solutions and can involve specialized AWS partners when required. Moze publicly cites a typical project range of roughly €20,000–€100,000; new developments may start around €20,000–€30,000 and reach €100,000–€150,000 depending on scope. This is a studio for clients who value UX, product logic and full technical implementation.

Instilla

Instilla is based on Via Arcivescovo Calabiana in Milan and works across development, marketing, data and AI. Its case studies include Venchi, Gruppo CAP, Romanengo, La Thuile, Boolean and B2B e-commerce projects. The company also maintains a dedicated technology practice covering web applications, native applications, solution architecture, system integration, CRM, PIM, DAM and corporate data.

A representative example is the La Thuile digital ecosystem built with a headless approach. In other projects, Instilla shows B2B e-commerce, a sales-representative application and solutions in which marketing analytics is connected to the technical infrastructure. This model suits businesses that need more than a website: data, CRM, automation, e-commerce and continuous measurement of results are all part of the project.

Discuss the project

The Rope

The Rope is a Milan agency with fourteen years of experience and a strong focus on corporate websites, e-commerce, SEO and long-term support. Public work includes the Bianchi digital ecosystem, websites for SAES Getters, Moto Morini and Pardgroup, the Open media platform, and projects for ISPI and Touring Superleggera. Its client list also includes Microsoft, IKEA, McDonald’s, AC Milan, Sisal, OVS, Libraccio and other major brands.

Development is handled in-house; the agency publicly mentions custom CMS solutions and work with WordPress, Shopify, PrestaShop and Magento. The Rope is particularly relevant to companies that need a corporate website with a strong visual layer, SEO and ongoing support after launch.

Colla Studio

Colla Studio is a small Milan team where branding and UX/UI are combined with frontend, backend and experimental web graphics. The studio lists Valentino, Loro Piana, EssilorLuxottica, Würth, GAS Jeans, Paul & Shark, Mooney Go and The Italian Sea Group among its clients. In 2025, the S-iR Creative Technology and Trending Peace projects received Awwwards recognition; for S-iR, the team created a 3D website.

The studio works with WordPress and Shopify customization, headless CMS platforms, proprietary CMS solutions, web applications, 3D experiences and SEO optimization. It is a strong choice for fashion, luxury, lifestyle and technology brands where visual expression needs to be backed by production-ready code.

Hoculus

Hoculus is a specialized Milan team focused on Shopify and Shopify Plus. The company has worked as a Shopify Partner for more than seven years and reports over 120 store projects. Clients include Velasca, Gallo 1927, Mason’s, Cinelli, Trenord, Brian & Barry, Damiano Organic, Labcare and Cavallino. Its specialization is much narrower than that of a general web studio, with most expertise concentrated around complex e-commerce.

The portfolio includes migrating Gallo from Magento 2 to Shopify Plus, moving Labcare from WooCommerce to Shopify Plus, consolidating Mason’s multilingual stores, improving Velasca performance and providing technical integration support for Brian & Barry. The team works with architecture, PIM, DAM, CRM, OMS, 3PL, B2B, POS, headless solutions and the development of public and private Shopify applications.

Boraso

Boraso is an agency with a strong focus on conversion marketing, UX and e-commerce, with a presence in Milan. Its portfolio includes Buffetti, Wycon Cosmetics, Sergio Bonelli, WWF, PittaRosso, PiùMe, Sea Shepherd and other brands. For Buffetti, the agency presents a commerce-system rebuild using Shopify and PIM; for Wycon, Shopify Plus; for PiùMe, BigCommerce; and for WWF, two e-commerce platforms on Shopify Plus.

The studio treats the online store together with SEO, analytics, advertising, automation and conversion optimization. Its technical work includes Shopify, Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, PIM and system integrations.

RAWFISH

RAWFISH has an office in Milan and has worked with mobile applications, web applications and backend systems since 2012; the company reports more than 300 completed projects. Its technology stack is published in considerable detail: Node.js and Ruby on Rails on the backend, PostgreSQL, MySQL and MongoDB for data, Vue.js, Angular and React for web interfaces, Swift and SwiftUI for iOS, Kotlin and Java for Android, and React Native and Flutter for cross-platform development.

The infrastructure layer includes Google Cloud Platform, Firebase, Docker and Kubernetes. This is a software-engineering profile suited to mobile products, SaaS, API-based services, customer portals or applications that require their own server architecture and scalable infrastructure.

WebRatio

WebRatio is an international software factory with a Milan office, originating from a project connected with Politecnico di Milano. The company began operating in 2001 and develops its own low-code platform for mobile, web and business-process automation solutions. By 2019, WebRatio publicly reported more than one hundred clients and one thousand developed applications.

WebRatio’s distinctive feature is its model-driven, low-code approach to business applications. Historical projects include Semioty, a cloud Things Relationship Management system for IoT. It is particularly relevant when the main requirement is process automation, internal applications and integrations.

Gag

Gag is a Milan digital agency and benefit corporation with an office on Piazza Baiamonti. The company combines design, websites, applications, platforms, AI, VR and marketing. Its public portfolio includes Fondazione Cariplo, Fondazione per la Scuola, Premio Inge Feltrinelli, Moka Colors, Parco Nord Milano and other institutional, cultural and commercial projects.

The broader client list includes Google, Vodafone, BTicino, Kartell, GUESS, Granarolo, Fondazione Umberto Veronesi, SDA Bocconi and ActionAid. Its work for foundations, education, culture and public-interest organizations is especially strong. E-commerce is also present, including Moka Colors and the Rossella Taffa jewelry store.

Discuss the project

eFarm Group

eFarm Group is a Milan software house that has developed applied systems for small and medium-sized businesses for more than twenty years. Its profile is distinctly technical: web applications, ERP, CRM, CMS, portals, mobile applications and e-commerce. The company explicitly lists Symfony on PHP and MySQL for web applications, Cordova for hybrid mobile applications, and its own CMS, WordPress and PrestaShop for websites and online stores.

Its case studies include TKart.it, which evolved from a printed magazine into a digital media project; Tac!, with iOS and Android applications, an administration system and API for B2B clients; and the Harpaceas eLearning and eShop ecosystem. eFarm is especially well suited to companies where the website is tightly connected to internal business logic.

TechStyle

TechStyle is part of Gruppo RES and operates from an office on Viale Piero e Alberto Pirelli in Milan. Its web practice covers websites, e-commerce, applications, SEO, accessibility and digitalization of business processes. Public client reviews mention VI-grade, Valter Moto Components, CLE Elettromedicali and Eurosic.

An interesting specialization is website sustainability and accessibility. The team describes measuring CO2 emissions, optimizing code and images, using more sustainable infrastructure, and working with WCAG requirements, keyboard navigation and screen readers.

#00F Agency

#00F Agency is a compact Milan digital agency working on websites, e-commerce and interactive web projects. Public portfolio highlights include CHILLBILL, Metalgienchi and Calzaturificio MGT. Its positioning shows a strong emphasis on creative web development, where implementation is closely tied to the brand’s visual system and unconventional interface behavior.

The studio suits companies looking for an expressive promotional website, brand website or e-commerce project with a distinctive character. The team is smaller than Alkemy or Caffeina, but the format is closer to an independent author-led web studio.

Coding Duck

Coding Duck is a software house with a presence in Milan and a focus on cloud development, web applications and mobile services. The company emerged after the success of the dovefareiltampone platform and builds projects around cloud microservices, scalability and applied business logic.

One public project description covers an MVP platform for finding and requesting exclusive venues for corporate events. This illustrates the company’s profile: web services, MVPs, internal systems and cloud architecture.

DGS Digital

DGS Digital operates in Milan and Monza and works on websites, e-commerce, web portals, SEO and applied systems. The company reports more than 25 years of experience. Its portfolio includes the Preventivipertrasporti.it portal, websites for Ferba and Kibare, e-commerce for Ferba and EmmePro, and projects where web development is combined with SEO and automation.

The team emphasizes custom code and customization rather than relying exclusively on template assembly. Based on its public projects, DGS is closer to the small and medium-sized business segment than to the large international agencies at the top of the ranking.

Creative Beans

Creative Beans is a studio with an office on Via Aosta in Milan that combines websites, e-commerce, mobile applications, branding, social media and SEO. Its portfolio includes IBC, Bruschetteria Bruschini, Hair Couture and Innocenti Immobiliare. The company works with more compact brands and local businesses, where a website often develops together with identity and content.

The studio’s technical offer explicitly includes website and mobile-app development, while its promotion services include SEO and optimization for AI-driven search. Creative Beans is suitable for small and medium-sized businesses that want one partner for the website, visual identity and ongoing digital support.

Plus Digital

Plus Digital is based on Via Gaspare Aselli in Milan and structures its offering around software development, UX/UI and multichannel communications. The company has its own product line: PLUS.4OM for personalized omnichannel communications delivered as SaaS or a fully outsourced model, PLUS.4DM for web design, e-commerce and digital marketing, and PLUS.4LEAD for managing prospective and existing customers.

This profile is relevant to companies where the website forms part of a longer customer-communication chain. If a business needs forms, CRM logic, personalization, lead management and several communication channels, Plus Digital is closer to a marketing-technology partner than a conventional design studio.

I-Creativi

I-Creativi positions itself as a Milan web agency working with websites, e-commerce and SaaS since 2016. Its technology stack is published openly: React, Next.js and Vue.js on the frontend; Node.js, PHP and Python on the backend; MySQL, PostgreSQL and MongoDB for data; WordPress as a CMS; Shopify, WooCommerce and PrestaShop for e-commerce; and AWS and Google Cloud for infrastructure.

This combination supports a broad range of tasks, from a corporate website to a full web application. For clients, the transparency of the stack is valuable in itself: it is possible to understand in advance that the agency can work across frontend, backend and database layers.

SuperDesign

SuperDesign is based in Meda, within the broader Milan metropolitan area, and works with Milan companies as a technology-focused web studio. Its offer includes headless architecture and React, B2B platforms, native and Flutter applications, WooCommerce, Shopify Plus, ERP integrations, technical SEO and branding. The studio’s own website is built on a heavily customized WordPress installation; the company also lists PHP 8.5, NGINX, Vanilla JavaScript and WebP/AVIF optimization.

Based on its service set, SuperDesign is interesting for medium-sized businesses that want to avoid heavy prebuilt templates and take a more engineering-led approach to a website or e-commerce platform. The studio has fewer highly recognizable public brand cases than the leaders of the list, but its technical specialization is described in detail.

What websites and digital products are built in Milan

What websites and digital products are built in Milan

Milan’s clearest characteristic is the high share of projects where the website is connected to commerce, brand or a software product. Fashion and retail create demand for Shopify Plus, catalogs, omnichannel commerce and sophisticated visual presentation. Hoculus works with Velasca, Gallo 1927 and Mason’s; Boraso with Wycon, PittaRosso and Buffetti; The Rope presents Bianchi and luxury-oriented projects. Here, website development often includes far more than a set of informational pages.

The second major segment is web applications and B2B systems. Moze builds AI services, educational platforms and software products; RAWFISH creates web and mobile applications using React, Vue.js, Node.js and cloud infrastructure; Coding Duck works with microservices; eFarm develops ERP, CRM, portals and API-based systems.

The third segment is corporate and institutional websites. Gag works with foundations and cultural organizations, The Rope with industrial and media brands, and TechStyle with B2B and industrial companies. These projects require content architecture, convenient management, accessibility, SEO and further website redesign after several years of operation.

Landing pages also remain a common format in Milan, but they are more often part of a campaign, a product launch or a hypothesis test. At product studios, a short promotional page may become the first stage of a future service; at communications agencies, it may serve as the landing page for an advertising campaign.

Technologies used by Milan web studios

It would be misleading to calculate a single technology statistic across the twenty companies because many do not publish their full stack. Three technical layers are nevertheless visible. WordPress and custom CMS solutions are common for marketing and corporate websites. Shopify and Shopify Plus, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Magento and BigCommerce are prominent in e-commerce. Applications use React, Next.js, Vue.js, Node.js, PHP/Symfony, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, cloud services and container infrastructure.

Moze openly lists React, Next.js, Node.js, PostgreSQL and MongoDB; RAWFISH lists Vue.js, Angular, React, Node.js, Rails, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Docker and Kubernetes; eFarm uses PHP, Symfony and MySQL; I-Creativi lists React, Next.js, Vue.js, Node.js, PHP, Python and three popular databases. These are architectures for a full web application or corporate system, where the interface communicates with an API, the backend processes business rules and data is stored in a database management system.

Notable projects by Milan studios

Notable projects by Milan studios

The following cases show several different sides of Milan’s market: AI-based products, complex e-commerce migrations, institutional platforms, B2B systems and headless architecture. They are useful because they reveal the technical and product work behind the finished interface.

For similar tasks, Big Fish Digital often uses an architecture such as Vue.js → REST API → Laravel → PostgreSQL or MySQL → CRM, ERP or 1C. This makes it possible to develop the interface and backend independently, store complex data, create user portals and roles, build integrations and automate processes. For a simpler corporate website, a CMS may be more practical, for example WordPress or MODX, when the project does not require a custom application layer.

Discuss the project

Matesub by Moze

Matesub demonstrates one of the strengths of Milan’s product ecosystem: the web interface is a working tool rather than a presentation layer. The service helps users create and synchronize subtitles with AI. Editing flows, work with media data and interface speed are critical for this kind of product.

Gallo 1927 and Hoculus

Migrating Gallo 1927 from Magento 2 to Shopify Plus is a good example of complex e-commerce development. The migration needs to preserve the catalog, SEO, data, integrations and business processes, then adapt them to the architecture of the new platform. Hoculus builds ongoing growth and support around projects of this type.

Fondazione Cariplo and Gag

For Fondazione Cariplo, Gag worked on an identity update and a new website intended to explain the foundation’s revised strategy. Information architecture is central here: a complex organization needs to explain programs, areas of work, projects and results without losing users in the structure.

Tac! by eFarm Group

Tac! combines mobile applications, an administration system and an API for integration with B2B clients. The user sees the application, but behind it are backend systems, an administration interface, data and an integration layer. For this kind of project, visual website design represents only a small part of the overall engineering work.

La Thuile and Instilla

In the La Thuile case, Instilla describes a new digital ecosystem and a headless solution. For a tourism destination, this allows content management to be separated from a specific interface and the same data to be used across several digital channels.

How much does website development cost in Milan?

Publicly available pricing confirms the wide spread across the market. Moze cites a typical project range of roughly €20,000–€100,000, while new developments can range from €20,000–€30,000 to €100,000–€150,000. On Clutch, the minimum project size for Colla Studio and Coding Duck starts at $10,000, for RAWFISH at $25,000 and for #00F at $5,000. Some smaller Milan companies show entry points of around $1,000–$5,000. These represent different classes of work, so reducing them to one average figure would be misleading.

A small landing page from a local provider may cost only a few thousand euros when the structure is straightforward, the amount of custom design is limited and there is no complex server-side logic. A custom landing page with research, strong art direction, animation, copywriting and development can easily move into the €5,000–€15,000 range.

A medium-scale corporate website can reasonably fall around €10,000–€30,000 with smaller agencies, and higher with studios that include deeper branding, research and custom development. E-commerce on Shopify or WooCommerce can begin at similar levels, but projects involving migration, PIM, ERP, multiple countries, B2B logic and Shopify Plus quickly move into the tens of thousands of euros. A product service, SaaS platform or user portal with its own backend belongs to another class altogether: €30,000–€100,000 and above is a normal market order of magnitude for serious development.

These ranges are benchmarks rather than a citywide price list. The final cost of a turnkey website depends on the scope of work. If the project first requires user research, architecture, user-flow design, website design, frontend, backend, database work and integrations, the total development price can rise several times over.

Discuss the project

What professional website development includes

Work begins with research into the business, competitors and users. The team then defines the architecture and user journeys, creates a prototype, develops the visual system and only after that moves into implementation. For a marketing website, the next layer may be the CMS. A service also requires frontend, backend, database structure, APIs, user roles and integrations. E-commerce adds product catalogs, inventory logic, payments, delivery, CRM, PIM and ERP.

A large part of the expensive work is almost invisible in a screenshot of the finished page. It includes interface states, responsive behavior, error handling, security, performance, data import, redirects, canonical URLs, sitemap.xml, robots.txt, Schema.org, correct HTTP status codes and cross-browser testing. The launch stage also requires technical SEO preparation; otherwise, a new website can lose search traffic accumulated by the previous version.

After launch, a separate lifecycle begins: behavioral analytics, problem fixing, CMS and library updates, development of integrations, new sections and new functionality. On complex projects, this stage continues for years.

Which studio to choose for a specific task

Which studio to choose for a specific task

For a product-oriented B2B service or startup, Moze, RAWFISH and Coding Duck deserve the first look. Moze is strong when research, UX/UI and development are all required; RAWFISH offers a broad mobile and backend stack; Coding Duck focuses on cloud solutions and microservices. If the architecture calls for Laravel, Vue.js, APIs and complex databases, their approaches can also be compared with BFD’s custom corporate development.

For fashion and retail e-commerce, Hoculus and Boraso are especially convincing. Hoculus is narrowly specialized in Shopify Plus and integrations, while Boraso combines commerce with UX, SEO and conversion marketing. Brands that also need a strong visual layer should add Colla Studio and The Rope to the shortlist.

For a large company with several digital workstreams, Alkemy, Caffeina and Instilla are more natural candidates. They have the resources for projects where the website is connected to data, advertising, CRM, content and several client-side teams. Gag is especially interesting for foundations, educational, cultural and public-interest organizations. eFarm Group fits businesses that need a portal, CRM, ERP or applied software system.

Small and medium-sized businesses have a wider range of options. DGS Digital, Creative Beans, I-Creativi, TechStyle and SuperDesign cover different combinations of website development, e-commerce, SEO and support. In this segment, comparing real cases, the technology stack and the actual scope of work is particularly useful.

Website support and ongoing development

Milan agencies increasingly sell long-term relationships, particularly in e-commerce and software products. Hoculus structures its services around growth after Shopify Plus migration, The Rope shows long-term support, Coding Duck offers continuous technical assistance, and Moze distinguishes between long-term product development and lighter support for stable websites.

Technical support includes bug fixing, updates, monitoring, functionality development, performance and security work. Website enhancements may involve integrations, user portals, new payment methods, catalogs and marketing tools.

How Milan differs from other web-development markets

Milan stands out for the density of the connection between design and business. Fashion, furniture, luxury, retail and publishing companies create demand for visually sophisticated websites, while the city also has a large corporate sector that needs CRM, commerce, data and automation. As a result, it is easy to find within one city a studio for a 3D brand website, a Shopify Plus migration or a B2B application built with React and Node.js.

Compared with Moscow, Milan is more strongly weighted toward fashion, lifestyle and e-commerce; compared with London, it has fewer giant international technology consultancies but a more visible layer of smaller independent studios. For an international client, this market is interesting because of its specialization: a partner can be selected around a specific project type and the technical culture of the team.

The same distinction matters for BFD. A turnkey website may mean a corporate resource on a CMS, or it may mean the interface of a larger system using Laravel, Vue.js, APIs and a database. The more precisely the client defines the task before choosing a studio, the easier it becomes to compare estimates, timelines and team capabilities.
